Elementary Math is one of my top subjects! A method I commonly employ in teaching math, especially math that involves processes, is to bring the student to the place where he or she both understands the concept and is able to orally explain it to me. After that, I have the student explain the process in writing. It is amazing what a difference this makes for the child's learning and mastery of the concepts. I also use a lot of manipulatives and hands-on learning strategies.

I've got around 8 years of college and university work under my belt, and I am getting ready to finish a BA in Elementary Education from Western Governors University. I love teaching. I got the teaching bug while teaching English as a Foreign Language in China. I taught there for almost 9 years altogether, 1 year in Beijing, 7 years in Tianjin, and 1 year in Taiwan. I now work as a substitute teacher for Lewis County Schools and I also volunteer in the school library where I help struggling students with reading.
I am very active in the classroom and I believe in making learning fun and enjoyable. There are so many ways to help children learn, yet many of them are not used for one reason or another. When the conventional has not worked!!!

I have worked in schools in Kentucky and Ohio. I have been a tutor, intervention aide, long term substitute teacher, and regular classroom teacher. I communicate freely with my students, and am always ranked among the most well-liked and effective instructors by my students. My best skill is helping students find what is in it for them to learn and use the material. I currently teach (adjunct) at a career College where I teach English, history, strategies for success, and communications classes.

My teaching style is very patient, kind, and laid back. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn and finish the work they are given, so I very rarely tell someone how to finish a problem or correct a sentence. Instead, I give suggestions of things to think about and ask a lot of questions so that the student can get to the answer themselves. I will gladly point them in the right direction but hesitate to ever point to the answer as I feel the lesson is very easily lost. A Little Bit About Me...

I have completed a MAST (Mathematics as Strategic Teaching) Seminar. I have completed training over engaging difficult students and I have also learned more innovative techniques in which to use when engaging students who are trying to achieve more challenging skills. I designed a program called Math Mates, which was an after school intervention program for students who needed more hands on time for learning, I opened the program up for all students but set aside certain days when specific students were invited so we could use more hands on manipulative and we worked on the different content standards.

I have worked with children the majority of my teen and adult life. I was a camp counselor where I was around them for a week and that's where my love for wanting to teach began.
