Experienced elementary school teacher

I have taught first through third grades for many years. Most of my experience is with elementary students. I now work with principals and teachers across the state to improve classroom instruction. I have also worked specifically with third graders to prepare them for the State Test. Each summer I am involved with the Read to Succeed camp where I work with students who have not passed the third grade end of the year test. The students retake the test after our camp and the vast majority pass and are promoted to the fourth grade. My schedule is very flexible.
I believe the first step in academic success is building self esteem and confidence. Learning should be engaging and fun. My students come to enjoy learning and gaining confidence as they grow and become better readers.

All throughout high school I tutored younger kids with homework or specific needs in classes. I'm very flexible and very hands-on with my teaching. As a visual learner, it helps me to have a visual aid whenever I can and I employ that in my teaching. My strategy is to make learning fun for the students. If I can't enjoy what I'm learning, then I won't learn it and as such I strive to make whatever I'm teaching enjoyable for the student.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Vocabulary : To help students learn, I use direct instruction by teaching specific words and indirect instruction such as exposing students to lots of new words and having them read a lot. I also use indirect instruction to help students develop an appreciation for words and experience enjoyment for reading. I am also experienced in the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts(ELA) for 3-8th Grade. I have provided basic reading sill, reading fluency, vocabulary and phonic instruction for struggling readers in grades 3rd-8th.

I have taught in the public school system for thirty-four years. I have taught Special Education students. I have taught on the elementary, middle and high school levels. I have taught the Mississippi State Curriculum and is presently teaching the Common Core State Standards for Math and English Language Arts.
