My comments on tutoring Special Education : 5 years experience being a special education teacher. I am familiar with providing instruction in reading, writing, math, adaptive and social skills in a special education setting.

My teaching style is very student driven. I take students interest in account when helping them. The ultimate goal of education is teaching students to overcome their weakness and teach them to use tools, so they can love learning. As a regular classroom teacher, I felt hampered due to class size. I was never satisfied connecting with just a few students. Every student was important to me. I realized that the only way for me to really reach students was by reducing the teacher-student ratio. As a tutor, I found that teaching smaller groups of students or one-on-one was for me. Using this style, I feel strongly that students learn more, particularly at home. Students are much more comfortable at home which creates an excellent environment for learning. Learning is a joyful experience and students have a better chance of tapping into their potential.

A Little Bit About Me...

Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.
As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.
