A Little Bit About Me...

I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning can be frustrating for many students when a particular subject does not come as naturally or easily as other subjects. Thus, I do my best to incorporate student's interests into reward systems and constantly give the student positive feedback about their progress to help motivate the student. As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.
Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Studies show that people who are used to success are more likely to try again and again when confronted with a challenge. My goal is to build a success-driven environment where the student feels like he/she can do anything. Of course, I challenge the student as well, but first I make sure they feel confident that they can tackle any obstacle they are confronted with.
