I can adapt my teaching style to auditory, visual or hands-on type learning. All students will be given a pre-test prior to instruction so that I can decern if the students problem is one of cognative development or simply gaps in the learning process. I provide a structured environment for students to achieve their full potential in subjects that may, at first, appear intimidating. I have high expectations and encourage independent, creative thought. Problem solving and reasoning skills are empahasized. Instead of just giving answers, I guide students to participate in the learning process and discover their own answers.
Most recently, I was a high school math teacher for 3 years specializing in PreAlgebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and Astronomy. I taught regular, advanced, and special education classes. I strongly believe that students grow and excel when they are given challenges that are just beyond their current level of understanding. Helping and watching children learn is inherently rewarding. While skills and content must be mastered, methods can and should be tailored to the individual student. Each child has her/his own style of cognitive processing and problem solving. Attention to the learner's style is critical to the successful acquisition of skills and concepts. I strive to make learning fun. Also, I have been trained in assorted mnemonic (memory) strategies. Most importantly, I believe self esteem is an essential factor in educational growth.
