A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working as a tutor at the college level throughout my college experience. I worked both for the local community college and for my self as a private tutor. I earned two bachelor degrees, a BS in chemistry with an emphasis in physical chemistry, and a BS in math with an emphasis in applied mathematics. I work in the TRIO center, which has allowed me an opportunity to tutor writing and English students as well as science and math. I can tutor math through calculus, chemistry, physics, and writing.
I love to teach students that want to learn. I have a lot of experience building confidence along with building basic skills. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy the process of helping students to learn. It is a great experience to see their minds grasp a new concept or idea. I realize that each student is an individual and as such may have a different learning style than another. My goal is to facilitate that learning so they feel and are successful in conquering the lessons to be learned.
I have had a variety of experiences as a teacher. I, at first, worked as a substitute for about 3 years. Then I worked as a 3rd-grade teacher in a private school for one year. Because of enrollment that position was cut. I went back to subbing for a time. From 2004-2009 I have worked for the Dallas School District as a personal tutor. My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on). I like using simple “demo” experiments to show the “magic” of chemistry. Demos are then backed up by showing the chemical equations to explain what is actually going on. I also tend to use a lot of analogies, that students can related to. I access web information to help explain chemical concepts in creative ways. I also try to get students to think of problems as puzzles. I believe learning can be a fun experience as long as we never forget to ask the fundamental questions - "Why and How?"

As an undergraduate at CSU, Sacramento I volunteered my time to tutor a student from the time she was in 6th grade through 8th grade. Tutoring was done mostly in math. I have a BA in Environmental Studies with a minor in Biology. I also have extensive experience using computer software, such as Microsoft Office and ArcGIS. During my college experience I was a part of many student study groups which involved asking help from others as well as offering guidance in subjects we felt strong in. Due to my love of reading and writing I have chosen to pursue a degree in the Classics at Whitman College. In 2007 I was asked by a professor to privately tutor another student in Latin. I joined the team at the Academic Resource Center and have been tutoring college students in English and other writing-intensive courses ever since.
