I believe in learning to do things the "hard" way for math, making change, etc. Calculators are good for higher functions and after basics are learned. I try showing different ways of looking at something so the child will understand one way or another. I stress creativity and working things out for yourself as that is needed in life.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching adults as well as high school students. I do not have much training teaching below junior high; however, I am confident that I could successfully teach math or language. Although, I don't mind the traditional classroom setting, I am quite used to instructing on a one-to-one basis. Our GED programs are completely individualized for learners to move at their own pace, and I encourage this type of teaching style when manageable. I love tutoring, as it helps me keep up-to-date with the material, and I enjoy seeing someone finally grasp a concept they had struggled with previously. I typically help a student by example, if applicable. In math courses, I find that working through problems with the student is best. For science courses, going over concepts in the chapters before doing problems works best. I also help the student take better notes in class and take better notes when reading the chapter.
