My philosophy of discipline is simple: observe, take data and find the function of the behavior. When a student misbehaves in class there is an underlying reason. Every behavior has a function. The function can be to gain access to an item or person, to avoid doing the work or aggressive behaviors if they do not understand the assignment completely, medicine or personal affects (hungry, sleepy or thirsty). I also believe in “brain breaks”. My students take a break every hour to get up, walk around, listen to music and get the wiggles out. As an adjunct instructor, I did not only lecture, but also invited guest speakers, assigned group projects, and used films and music to deliver the content of the class. I understand all students learn differently, so it was my goal to ensure that I offered a variety of techniques to present the class material. I encouraged my students to offer suggestions if they had a better idea about the method of instruction.
