ADD/ADHD is one of my top subjects!

I worked for 12 years as a Special Education teacher in the public school system, teaching students with ADD, learning disabilities, autism, Aspergers, emotional and behavior disorders, and mild intellectual disabilities in a resource room and inclusion setting. I am able to quickly make significant connections with the students, building the good rapport that is essential to achieving a good working relationship. I especially enjoy working with reluctant and struggling readers, and nothing makes me happier than to see them overcome the obstacles that have kept them from success.

More About This Tutor...

My philosophy of discipline is simple: observe, take data and find the function of the behavior. When a student misbehaves in class there is an underlying reason. Every behavior has a function. The function can be to gain access to an item or person, to avoid doing the work or aggressive behaviors if they do not understand the assignment completely, medicine or personal affects (hungry, sleepy or thirsty). I also believe in “brain breaks”. My students take a break every hour to get up, walk around, listen to music and get the wiggles out. By doing this one simple trick, they are able to concentrate better and have an opportunity to get the wiggles out. I also have “my time versus your time”. Meaning “my time” is a time for the students to learn or pay attention while I am teaching. “Your time is your play time. If my time gets taken away then your time is taken away. It is a ... read more

More About This Tutor...

During high school I worked as a volunteer in St. Petersburg, Florida through All Children’s Hospital. Within the Bedside Buddies Program, I was able to spend over 200 hours working with physically and mentally challenged children to maintain their grades when they were experiencing long staying in the hospital. With this experience under my belt, I pursued my degree in psychology, achieving a BS rather than a BA to exhibit my proficiency for the mathematics and sciences. Having recently graduated and taking time off before applying to graduate school, I would like to maintain my contact with the tutoring and teaching setting, and do my best to change the lives of those that I help.
During college, I swam varsity, an experience that taught me the patience and time management required to balance a rigorous academic schedule with the physical strain of a full-time sport. Later, I fo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My passion is to teach and work with children. Although I believe that all students are capable of learning, I am certain that students learn in different ways. As a good educator, I am charged with the challenge of presenting the lesson so that it suits the students individual learning style. I accomplish this by providing a constructive approach to learning.
As a graduate of Columbus State University, I have been driven to achieve a high level of excellence in education. I have earned a teacher's certification in Special Education. The certification, along with the experience gained, has enabled me to gain an understanding of the disabled and at-risk student. Over the past eleven years I have learned and employed various teaching strategies that have aided in the success of my students. What I have learned working with students is that many do not learn in the same manner. I beleive in what is called top process learning. Given the student a concept and allowing them to explore the possibilities of how one arrives at such a concept has allowed deeper critical thinking and strategic planning. However, this method is not predominately taught in Georgia education system. I have found this method to be very effective. The other method is patience. Students who strugge with their academic learning usually are having other areas of difficulty which may be social learning. Having clinical training allows me to make a more accurate assessment.
During the last 10 years I have worked with all levels of students, preschool through college levels. These areas include reading, math, english, psychology, science and social studies. I am a self starter and have worked wi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in one-on-one teaching and hands on. These to me are the best way to get through to some children. Online tutorals are a new way to reach kids and adults alike, since everything now is media based. I feel this is an effective way to reach students. I will give my best to demonstrate this way of teaching. Hands on and visually seeing also helps to accelerate the learning experience.
I have been working with children of and on all my life. My credentials are personal as well as professional. From a personal perspective, I have a child with autism for which I have spent many hours tutoring in the afternoons. I also have another daughter, who has struggled in school.
