My comments on tutoring Reading : I have a MA in English and I have taught college level composition (English 101 and 102). I currently teach high school Advanced English.

I guide the student to his or her understanding of the material. I do not feed information. I ask that the student come to their own conclusions.
I have a BA in English and Creative Writing. I received a MA in English Literature in 2005. I began my teaching career at Calhoun teaching English Composition 101 and 102. As a writing center consultant, I was instructed not to spend much time proofreading student papers or reviewing small minutiae. I think educators must take into account the different ways in which students learn. For instance, I've noticed that math students may have difficulty adding and subtracting fractions, but have no trouble whatsoever when I ask about dimes and quarters. If an instructor can build a bridge between new material and material the student has already mastered, the student's retention can significantly improve.
