I recently relocated to the Huntersville area. I recently graduated from UNCW with a degreee in Psychology with a focus on children. Since middle school, working with children has been my passion. I realized my dream after some of my cousins came over to America from the war torn country of Liberia and were having a very hard time adjusting. I was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill's Master's Program for Rehabilitation but declined after fearing it would take me down the path of working with the elderly instead of working with children. A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with children since I was 13. I have worked in settings where I was a daycare worker, a nanny, and a substitute teacher. I believe that every child has thier own unique way of learning even though there may be a mainstream way of teaching. My teaching style ultimately depends of the student. I work much better with an individual or small group than with a class because I can find the angle that works best for each student. For younger children, I like to make learning into different games to keep their attention. For older students, I think it is important to establish some level of confidence early on within a subject so that they do not get too discouraged while new material is presented.
I have always had a good ability in math and sciences. I obtained a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester, with a minor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. When presented with an assignment, I ask my tutee to read the directions of the assignment and to relay them back in his/her own words. I ask which aspects are clear and which aspects are troubling. I believe that first key step to successful teaching is to allows the student convey his/her needs or problem areas. While much can be gained from looking at previous evaluations and test scores, I think that it is crucial to let the student express their needs to make them feel comfortable and build a commitment to the teaching program. In individual sessions, I feel that allowing the student to discuss concepts out loud in addition to completing written exercises and preparing questions facilitates the learning process. I also find that real world analogies are useful ways of linking academic information to previously learned concepts and facilitate the student's understanding.
