The first student I taught was in October 2012 while I was still employed by the University of Pittsburgh, School of Nursing- Center for Research & Evaluation, developing web and desktop applications to collect, manage, and transform research data, and working on obtaining my Master's degree. I am a senior at Reed College studying mathematics. While at Reed I have worked as both a grader and a tutor. Having graded assignments, I can quickly grasp multiple ways to approach a problem and give commentary where necessary. I also have experience working at an alternative school as a math tutor, with students who have trouble succeeding in traditional learning environments. Furthermore, being a current student and having recently taken the GREs, much of the material is still fresh in my mind. I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. There is almost always an example or an analogy that can explain something that is confusing a student. Sometimes it takes a few examples before you find the one that makes sense to that person, but with a little patience it becomes easily understandable for the student.
