I remain convinced of the necessity of obtaining basic math skills for success in today's world, and I spend a lot of time maintaining my own skills in math and computers. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people.
