A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my educational career I have always enjoyed science classes. Due to this proficiency I was selected as a teacher's assistant for two undergraduate Biology classes. I also took 3 science based education classes. These classes were a great experience where we worked at a local high school with three exceptional science teachers. During the school year, I also taught a six week Saturday science experience to 4th -6th graders; then in the summer I taught at two different science camps. After college, I chose to become a dental student at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my time at the LRC, I developed a teaching style where I first understood the learning style of the student (i.e. visual or auditory) and then discovered why they wanted tutoring, wanted to focus on, and what they wanted to accomplish. I would then delve into the subject matter at hand, drawing, discussing, or having them draw any specific process or problem. Finally, I would have them tell me what they understood from the process that we just discussed. If I felt the student was confident in their abilities I would test them, if I found that they were not very confident in their abilities, I would discuss the lesson and confirm that they understood. In these cases, I would also try to work on their academic confidence.

A Little Bit About Me...

Perhaps stemming from my time as the owner of a successful construction company, I've found that I learn best when I'm provided mental imagery, which often means the employment of analogies and metaphors. Cell biology became simplified when viewed as the textile manufacture and the subsequent distribution and utilization of the products. Due to being a non-traditional student I've also realized that patience is imperative. I've felt like instructors have given up on me in the past, only to keep forging ahead either by myself or with the aid of a tutor and eventually master whatever material was at hand. Also, my experience in the past few years in the E.R. has allowed me to become adept in dealing with and defusing difficult situations.

I am a Visual learner/teacher, I feel it is much easier to learn when being able to visualize what is happening. Many of the sciences happen at such a microscopic level that it may be hard to comprehend what is actually happening so with larger visual aides I believe learning is much easier and less stressful.
I obtained a BA from CU at Boulder in 2004 in Psychology and Communications and I am now currently one year away from attending medical school. I have taken all the science courses required to get into medical school and have been tutored in many of them as a supplemental form of education. In my time being tutored many other students realized how much more knowledge of the subject i had gained above them that they in turn recruited me to tutor them. I have been doing that for approximately six years.

The University of Arizona is one of 10 schools throughout the country that offer the physiology major to undergraduates.
