A Little Bit About Me...

I have been an "instructor"-teacher for over 15 years. I teach math, economics, finance, business, and management for several colleges. I have been a Boy Scoutmaster and merit bade counselor and have worked with youth for over 15 years. I have always been given very high marks as an instructor with many comments on my positive energy and help for students. I have an applied mathematics minor so I would be able to teach algebra, geometry, trig, and introductory calculus.
I am a question-answer type of teacher. I like to demonstrate, have them do, answer questions, clear up ambiguities, and then test or at least check to insure learning and understanding. I have a style of quiet, but firm expectations. I have a great amount of patience. I will do best with high school and college age students, and on occasion, with more mature middle school students.

Perhaps stemming from my time as the owner of a successful construction company, I've found that I learn best when I'm provided mental imagery, which often means the employment of analogies and metaphors. Cell biology became simplified when viewed as the textile manufacture and the subsequent distribution and utilization of the products. Due to being a non-traditional student I've also realized that patience is imperative. Some years ago a friend told me that volunteer help was really needed for the adult GED program in our local area. I decided to give up time for two hours a week. When I begin the program it was really sad to see someone struggling over simple arithmetic problems, I was glad to help then. I also get a feeling of accomplishment when students show understanding and that understanding is reflected by an increase in homework scores and test scores. I have earned two bachelor degrees, BA in Organic Chemistry and BA in Electronics. I have tutored students in mathematics, chemistry, electronics, basic computer programming and physics.
