With my personality, I love being around children and helping them with any problems whether it be in school or general problems they are going through. Normally, this takes investing time into not only the child, but the family, to see what the kids like and why. When looking back to when I was in school, although I had a natural talent for math I feel that the classes that I did the best in were the ones that the teachers would build a relationship with me. Being a current student myself, I can appreciate the hardships and struggles of education. I feel that you must always level with your students, no matter what the age. The students are the ones who must lead the class. However, we as educators have a duty to guide and to nourish this idea. We must be leaders who encourage a positive and productive learning environment, while also maintaining an enjoyable experience. I believe in a split between communicative and explicit teaching. Students are given input through examples and other meaningful activities. They then are encouraged to attempt their own output through group work, homework, or discussion. In my year of graduate school I accepted a position as a teaching assistant. It was my first opportunity to stand in front of a class. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to teach and also help people in subject areas of which you have great expertise and interest. More recently, I have had vast experience working with middle-school students and am currently doing in-home tutoring. I continue to enjoy working with all types of students, especially in mathematics.
In teaching, one must realize that students learn at different rates of speed. Consequently, you need to find a pace at which the student feels comfortable. As most of my experience and interest is in mathematics, I always want to see a student be able to solve problems on their own. It's a great feeling when a student overcomes a hurdle and they realize that they can get the right answer.
