A Little Bit About Me...

tutoring = 30 years: I have tutored students informally for as many years as I have been teaching. The topics I teach are difficult for many students, and some require out-of-class help. I have taught for nearly 30 years: a couple of years at a junior college in Cleveland, served as a TA in math and astronomy at OSU, then ~25 years at Denison Univ., and 4 years at a high school. Subjects taught: astronomy at Denison, physics at the jr. college, and physics, physical science, and Alg. II in high school. At Denison I ran the observatory and planetarium, and dealt with all ages during public guest nights, summer camps, Elderhostels, and teaching intensive summer workshops for teachers.
I use a Socratic method, gently applied. I try to uncover what the student knows, and get back to the point where he/she has gotten lost. Once that is established we can move forward.

A Little Bit About Me...

With my personality, I love being around children and helping them with any problems whether it be in school or general problems they are going through. Normally, this takes investing time into not only the child, but the family, to see what the kids like and why. When looking back to when I was in school, although I had a natural talent for math I feel that the classes that I did the best in were the ones that the teachers would build a relationship with me. The students are the ones who must lead the class. However, we as educators have a duty to guide and to nourish this idea. A Little Bit About Me...

In teaching, one must realize that students learn at different rates of speed. Consequently, you need to find a pace at which the student feels comfortable. As most of my experience and interest is in mathematics, I always want to see a student be able to solve problems on their own. It's a great feeling when a student overcomes a hurdle and they realize that they can get the right answer.
In my year of graduate school I accepted a position as a teaching assistant. It was my first opportunity to stand in front of a class. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to teach and also help people in subject areas of which you have great expertise and interest. More recently, I have had vast experience working with middle-school students and am currently doing in-home tutoring. I continue to enjoy working with all types of students, especially in mathematics.
