I believe that every person has a specific set of gifts, talents and abilities that is unique to each of us. Education, through its varied forms, is vital in the process of equipping children with the ability to grow and walk in their fullness so that they are confident in contributing their part to the world. With this belief, teaching must start with the person and then move to the content. I very much enjoy the process of teaching and learning with others. I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach. It can not only be a welcome and refreshing change/respite from the ‘usual textbook and ditto’ drill, but also helps by illustrating complex processes and concepts in a basic comprehensible manner first; I then add the more difficult material to the ‘firmer’ foundation.

A Little Bit About Me...

I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at the moment. I tend to push students to work hard and challenge them to think about the process instead of just giving answers.
