I have two years tutoring experience. In college, I tutored college students who struggled with math (algebra, trigonometry, calculus, etc). Other experience I have is derived from having taken and successfully passed (A) those courses I can tutor. I also help and tutor students who would like to learn how to play piano by ear, chords (major, minor, diminished, augmented), hear a song and determine chords, accompanying a singer, etc. I have experience in playing piano by ear for churches from almost 2 years. I occasionally play piano/keyboard in a band setting.

I am able to explain mathematics in a variety of ways, so I can find out what works with any student. I emphasize the logic of math concepts in addition to just memorizing procedures.

My teaching philosophy has developed through my experiences as a high school physics teacher, as a teaching assistant in the Department of Physics at Texas Tech University, and through tutoring individual students. In my experience, high level of student participation is important. First, it allows students to at least start thinking towards a problem in their own way, and later start debating over what they have learned in the classroom. I try to encourage the class by carefully organizing my lectures. With a ... read more

I like to work one-on-one with students. I can get a better feel for their learning style and therefore teach for that specific student. I like to teach by relating the subject to real life situations. All students can learn anything, it just sometimes takes a more personal approach before it really clicks. That is what I want to provide for a student.

I have a very strong passion towards teaching. While many teachers tend to go towards adminstration afters 10 years of teaching, I have no desire to go that route. A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher, I will not only be relaying important information to my students, but also helping them grow as young adults. Effective teaching can help instill a desire to learn and responsibility in the students. There are a few key components I feel are important in order to be a successful teacher. These include preparation, interactive learning, and a desire to continue growing as a teacher.I feel that I will have taught successfully when my students succeed. If they can leave the session with a greater understanding and appreciation for science, I will feel that I’ve successfully completed my role as their teacher and coach.

Hands on, real world examples are the most effective when learning mathematics. It is very important to understand the theory behind what is calculated, in order to understand what is being done. Working lot of examples, from different points of view, and finding easy ways to sanity check your answers is also important.

My teaching style is my tutoring style as I do mostly tutoring. I work with students to determine the missing math procedures or concepts. When a student misses a question, I do not simply show them the solution or correct answer. I solve the problem with the student (without looking at the answer) by discussing the approach (procedure) together. In this way, we share the approach to the solution and weak spots are revealed.
I have had a very successful career as an Engineer/Plant Manager. I changed careers and I am now Teaching/Tutoring. I teach/tutor High School math at an inter-city school (IPS). I also work for a Huntington Learning Center working with high-achieving high school students trying to improve their SAT and ACT math scores.
