My comments on tutoring Earth Science : Earth Sciences includes: Physical Geography and Geology, Geology is one of my two majors.

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.

More About This Tutor...

Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get frustrated and overwhelmed. It is easier to learn more from current knowledge than try to teach a whole new way. After all, most students study habits are based on how their teacher has taught them, and I wouldn't go against what the teacher has taught. The point of tutoring is to help a child understand the work they are currently doing in school. It is my job to make sure that happens. I will want to speak with your child to determine the best way to teach them.

I have a laid back style of teaching. I like to simplify difficult concepts and explain in different terms in order to help the student understand it. I am very good at presenting information in a different way in order to make difficult concepts easier.
I have a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from West Virginia University. I also played football in college and was active in tutoring fellow players. Attending and graduating from Davidson College, a small liberal arts college in NC, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry was an extremely rewarding experience. I found that the college groomed their students by emphasizing analytical skills--both scientific and literary--and giving back to the community through both service and volunteerism. As a college student, I tutored students in mathematics courses up to Multivariable Calculus and chemistry students up to Organic Chemistry. I have also taught beginning Math, Reading, and SAT Preparation at a local learning center in Atlanta as well, in addition to my experience teaching and tutoring AP Chemistry as a high school teacher.
I find nothing more exciting and rewarding than teaching a topic or subject to an individual and seeing the expression and excitement on their face when they truly begin to understand the materia ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught 4th grade for 5 years in the Rock Hill School District from 1991-1996. After I completed my Master's degree, I worked for 3 years as an Elementary Guidance counselor. I enjoyed both experiences and missed the field once I was out of it. In 1999, my husband took a job in California and I did not continue teaching. I have had a variety of work experiences since then but still have the ability and desire to help children learn.
I enjoy watching children succeed and believe that all children can be successful if they are taught in a way that matches their learning style and capabilities. As the mother of a child with developmental delays, I have hands-on experience working with a special learner. I believe the flexibility of tutoring would be ideal for my current situation and allow me to put my skills to use in a way that will benefit my family and others.

My teaching style is like a coach. I show the student the method to solve the problem and then I observe, correct and praise the student while he/she solves similar problems. It is important to explain the underlining principle in the problem so the student will be able to solve similar problems without just memorizing a few rules. I try to use the best learning style (verbal, logical, visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc) that fits each student.
Throughout my years of teaching I had some students who needed additional help so I tutored along with my teaching. I spent extra time with them after class or in a laboratory. I won many awards for teaching and was selected teacher of the year in 2002. Along with adult college students, I have worked with Boy Scouts, middle school students and high school students. Also, I volunteered as an instructor for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Scho ... read more

I received my bachelor's degree in 2002 and have been teaching middle school math ever since. I have experience tutoring students ages 5 - 17 in one-on-one and in settings such as Sylvan Learning Center.
I love math and strongly believe that mathematical thinking and problem solving skills are essential to everyone. With elementary age students, I stress the importance of computational fluency through repetitious practice. With older students, I stress critical thinking with apply their basic skills to everyday problem solving.

I graduated with honors from the College of Charleston (and the Honors College) with a degree in Business Administration/Finance and a minor in Pre-Actuarial studies. As part of my minor I completed Calculus I, II, III, and IV, Linear Algebra, and graduate courses in Probability and Statistics. When helping students learn and understand material I believe it is important to first gain the student's trust, so they will not resist receiving help. I am a recent college graduate and find that it is easier to relate to, communicate with, and gain the ... read more

I believe that each child learns in a different way, and as a teacher it is my challenge and duty to teach in such a way, to approach the problem from enough different angles, that each student would understand the concept at hand. I love that challenge. I am easy going, patient, and I relate well to children. I look forward to learning with and from each student I encounter.
In 2002 I graduated with a degree in biotechnology. During the last semester of school, I was a substitute teacher, where I learned a lot about children and different teaching styles. After graduation, I pursued a career as a chemist, but I always maintained a second part-time job teaching, in some fashion. Usually, that teaching involved a pool. I have been a swimming lesson instructor for 10 years and have been a YMCA swim coach for 3 seasons, coaching over 200 children per year. In these opportunit ... read more
