I believe that real learning takes place when students are actively engaged in the material. Finding the right materials to teach with will often inspire intrinsic motivation.
I have currently spent over 350 hours in a variety of school settings. From private school to public, first grade to twelfth, I have seen it all. The majority of my experience has taken place in a suburban middle school, however I have also spent a reasonable ammount of time working with inner city high school students. I double majored in college to recieve a bachelors degree in literature and writing, and spent a full year interning at a student run newspaper as a journalist and copy editor. I have tutored middle school students with a variety of learning disabilities, as well as SAT prep for high school students. I am currently registered for a series of NYS tests to earn my certification to teach.

Teaching is not for everyone, but I knew it was for me when I started student teaching and felt the adrenaline rush of 25 eyes staring up at me for guidance. I feel the need to spread as much knowledge as possible to the up and coming generations.I always feel rewarded when the day ends because I was able to help students get a better grasp on life. I also believe that the student is the teacher as well. Through my experiance, a student can teach an instructor just as much as the instructor can teach them. I am very laid back yet can still hold the fine line of being direct and rigorous at the same time. I am excited to teach anyone and everyone. It is with out question that my education will still continue as I apply to graduate school.
As A recent graduate from a Liberal Arts School, I found it easy to connect with teaching as my calling. I have always driven for high levels of e ... read more

I base my teaching on the pholosophy of Eli Siegal: "Aesthetic Realism". It states that "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and a making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves" Thus, I relate the subject matter in hand to students' personal lives. For example, if we are learning Le Chartelier's Princlple, which concerns the response of a chemical reaction to stress, I have my students discuss the types of stress they experience, and their responses. We compare this to the beautifully precise and appropriate reaction in Chemistry, where the response is never inapproriate, insufficent or in excess. This method has also taught me that I have much to learn from my students and their life experiences. .

Because I have had to meet the needs of so many different students in so many different environments, I am flexible with teaching methods. A lack of resources overseas drove me to be creative and exercise methods of experiential learning: hands-on and engaged learning. I believe in creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for students, with some room for fun. I acknowledge that every student possesses a different learning style and I strive to compliment that, especially while tutoring. I maintain high expectations and expect considerable progress. My hope is that armed with an education, youth will be incorporated into more decision making around the world.
I graduated with honors from a formal university, where I tutored fellow classmates; however, I gained most of my tutoring and teaching experience overseas, in a universal classroom. I have taught youth and a ... read more

After graduating from Baruch College, I worked in the inner-city Catholic School of Brooklyn. I taught 8th Grade English and had great success turning non-writers into eager learners. I was also the Math coordinator for grades 5-8. I have tutored college entrants having difficulty with essay writing. Most recently, I taught 5th Grade in a local charter school. The successful preparation of students to communicate via written skills has been a component of all my teaching experiences.
My style of teaching is predicated on the knowledge that each child is an individual learner. Identification of students needs makes teaching more interesting to both teacher and learner. I also like to have the child discover the importance of an education. Answer the need to know what's in it for me? Motivation!!!! After finding the motivator the rest is easy. I served as a tutor, primarily for English, History, and writing, for three years while attending Southern Vermont College. Following graduation, I worked for three years as a paraprofessional for Leland & Gray Union High School. While working in this capacity there were several one on one situations similar to the relationship that exists between tutors and their students. In addition to the aforementioned subjects I tutored while in college, I also assisted students in other areas such as basic math and general science.
I primarily use the Socratic Method (question and answer) as my teaching style. I believe that asking students the right questions helps them to learn the information. Also, in certain instances I believe it helps the learning process if the subject matter can be related to an area of interest. I believe this can be a key component in a student's understanding of ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My area of expertise and greatest joy have always been reading and writing, from childhood on. My dual degree is in magazine journalism and linguistics. These skills have enabled me to work in the New York City publishing industry in a variety of editorial positions. Here in the capital district, my favorite job has been project manager at a language services provider, where I could use my French and even my Norwegian while placing and producing translations. My favorite volunteer job has been working in the classroom at my children’s elementary school, mentoring children as they worked on reading, math and special projects.
I am a people person, first and foremost. I enjoy getting to know families and children, and working together to create a learning environment that helps each student learn at his or her own pace. I like to look at challenges from many different angles, and I s ... read more

As a professional educator, I am dedicated to seeing all students succeed. I have earned two bachelor degrees, a BA in History and a BA in English, as well as New York State certification and my MAT Social Studies. I have tutored throughout my academic career, and continue to teach and tutor in a wide variety of subjects.
I am a strong believer in Multiple Intelligences. I know that first I must learn who my students are and how they learn if I am to teach them successfully. I employ the Socratic method often possible, and keep lessons as student-centered as possible. I frequently make use of the students' interests and technology to engage them. Students thrive when they see the usefulness of what they are learning, and when techniques are adapted to their needs.

I have always wanted to be a teacher, specifically to teach reading. I have tutored throughout high school, participated in the tutor reading program through Big Brothers Big Sisters in Schenectady, and I am just completing my first early literacy class at Saint Rose. I am almost halfway through my Masters in the art of teaching program and should be student teaching within the next year. I have excellent paper writing skills, as I was an English major, and can do both MLA and APA style formatting. I have tutored high school students as well as elementary students. This past semester I have been focusing on reading observation for beginning level readers.

I very much enjoy teaching both children and young adults. It gives me great satisfaction in helping others achieve a higher level of knowledge and skills. In addition, I feel that tutoring is a two-way street, whereby both the student learns material from the tutor, while at the same time the tutor learns how to better present the material in a way that is conducive for the student's learning. As such I strive to create a teaching environment that is both welcoming, yet challenging. Lastly, when it comes to learning and teaching, I believe in perseverance. Not every student has the ability to comprehend and retain everything all at once. Therefore as a tutor I would strive to instill this quality in my students.
