Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

I've never actually tutored someone, but I am very good at relating with younger kids and High Schoolers. I was in band from 8th grade to 12th grade where I participated in the Front Ensemble section with keyboards, vibraphones, marimbas, xylophones and various other instruments. I was in the Wind Ensemble which is the highest band class and my last year they introduced the Percussion ensemble where I was a soloist. I was also the section leader during my last year as well. I teach a bible study class at my church where I am not always given my lesson on time, so I usually do very well under pressure. I did very well in High School by graduating with honors. I have always been in the top reading and Literature classes and I did very well in my Art classes. My grade in history was high eighties to high nineties so that was a great set of classes as well. A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a bachelor’s degree in History and English, as well as a master’s degree in teaching. My educational background has given me a wide range of knowledge in the humanities, and my liberal arts education has helped me develop high reading and writing skills. I have four years of experience running writing workshops and tutoring first-year college students and non-native English speakers in study skills. From these experiences, I have gained expert knowledge in teaching literacy and study skills. Also, from my time teaching at a public high school, I am very familiar with the types of expectations teachers have of students and can help students "crack the code" of multiple choice, short answer, and research assignments and tests.
My teaching philosophy and style is founded upon the belief that all children are brilliant and can succeed. My approach to teaching is highly in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My last semester at FSU I internship with 1st grade students. I assisted students with areas they were struggled in and encouraged them to push themselves. I tutored several students in reading and writing skills. I also helped prepared students for their weekly math tests. By the end of the semester I took over teaching the class. Some classes in my major required me to do projects with children. As a volunteer, I participated this past year at camp Woe-Be-Gone. This is a one day camp that works with about 120 children, helping them learn at the museum of science and industry while understanding and coping with the illness or loss of loved one. In high school I volunteered with Best Buddies, allowing me to work with handicapped children. I also participated in TOPS as an assistant coach for handicapped children. I have also tutored children of friends of the family.

I am the author of five historical novels and a number of articles, poems and short stories. I occasionally do short “residences” teaching Language Arts and Drama to special needs students in k-12 schools for VSA Arts of Florida. My graduate studies emphasized American and Tudor/Stuart History. My doctorate included a Criminal Justice minor. I regularly teach writing and grant writing seminars to adults, usually through libraries on weekends or in the evening.
I believe everyone will respond well to individualized instruction when the tutor studies the student's learning style and offers the information in the form best suited to each learner. I am patient and encouraging with students. I work hard to find ways to present a subject so that each learner will find it interesting.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe children want to learn, if it is done with humor and patience. It just takes the time and effort to find the way that works best. I am a person that wants every child to succeed and will work to find the best way for your child.
Even though I received my B.A. in Criminal Justice, I am knowledgeable in several other areas of study. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers and laboratory reports, along with essays because of my interest in other various fields of study.

I love teaching others and would be a very positive model for those who have a defeatest attitude in the very beginning. It is my motto "a person can be set up for success or be set up for failure". I choose success for myself and others because even the most minimal achievement can mean a great deal. I believe at different ages children can be inspired to do well with their education.
As a graduate of The Ohio State University I was very driven to assist other individuals whenever I could to complete their education and help them in any way I possibly could. All learning starts with a question, both by teacher and student alike. My role is both as teacher (coach and guide) and student (questioner). I should employ a variety of questioning techniques to better understand strengths and weaknesses, then prescribe remedies tailored for individual strengths and weaknesses, facilitating the learning process and desired outcome. Most people know intuitively how they learn, as well as which modalities work best for them. Paying attention, listening, probing with questions, observing responses, being patient is the first part of my job. Often times the student knows what works best and can even tell you. So I just need to pay attention. Once the diagnosis is evident then I can prescribe, or at least give suggestions that help facilitate the desired outcome. Then it's evaluate, make adjustments, continue and expand on new learning sets and ac ... read more

My personal philosophy is to let children make their own discoveries. I am essentially a person that will guide a student to that discovery and ask questions all along the way to activate their brain in terms of problem solving. In my experience, a child will have a stronger retention of subject matter if they are allowed to discover it and understand it on their own terms. I am also a believer in bringing a child's confidence level up, as many children give up before they even start a project because of low self confidence. Simply by encouraging the child to believe in his/ her capabilities, I will increase the productivity of the session and build a relationship on trust and mutual respect.

More About This Tutor...

I firmly believe in students succeeding in school and life. Having a love for learning and school is the key to good grades and a healthy attitude. I don’t believe any child wants to fail. Quite the contrary, children want to succeed. When students fail, it is because the system failed them and not the other way around. I believe the key to teaching kids is to help that child experience immediate success so they can gain self esteem during critical elementary school years. Next, areas of strength need to be identified and emphasized while weaknesses need to be improved. Meanwhile homework cannot be treated as an isolated event, but should be incorporated into the learning strategy.
