A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I have always had tutoring positions, whether it was for my peers in college, volunteering for the Salvation Army, or running after school programs after graduating. I am a PA certified tutor, with conflict resolution, mentor, and CERT training (Community Emergency Rescue Team). It is important to me to have a profession where I feel that I am helping other people to progress in their lives. I genuinely care about the well being of each person I come into contact to and want to help in any way I can to make life easier, and more fulfilling for all of us.

I enjoy working with children and young adults. I attempt to find the methods/means by which the student learns best. My initial objective is to ascertain the student’s learning goals. Then I familiarize myself with the material with which the student is currently working, so as to develop a successful learning approach. This is an ongoing process as the student progresses. I am patient and considerate of any learning problems the student may have, and adjust my teaching methods accordingly, although I am not an expert in learning disabilities. I am currently a mid-career scientist who is looking to transition into the teaching profession. I have tutored high school and college students for several years in chemistry, algebra, physics, and geometry. I have a BS in Chemistry and have taken additional coursework in chemistry and education. I have extensive experience as a chemist working in the laboratory, and have several published research articles in the field.
My goal in teaching is to help students understand how the scientific process affects them on a personal level. I try to connect science and mathematics to the world around them by helping them to understand science in the context of other disciplines, including art and politics. Furthermore, I draw on my experience in environmental and pharmaceutical laboratories to increase interest in the coursework.
