I love to help children understand a subject better. It is a great feeling to see a student get the idea after being helped. I believe that every student is capable of learning; it all depends on their learning style. In my masters program and while I have been teaching, I have learned many ways to get students engaged in the material they are learning. Some students learn better with one on one and some do better with group work. You just have to try different approaches until you see which one works best. Sometimes it just depends on what is being taught. If you show interest in the student he/she will show more interest in your class or subject area and do better.

Initially, I found that students would have the "oh my god" look on their face when trying to solve a problem. Many of these students benefitted greatly from my ability to break a complex problem into manageable steps they could follow. In the past, I would ask each student what gave them the most problem about algebra. Based upon their responses, we worked together with a "team approach" to solve a problem.
