It definitely is important to combine styles. I use direct instruction, as well as guided instruction, and groupwork. Positive Experienced Tutor

I am the mother of 3 children, two with college degrees and one currently in college. I was very involved throughout my children's school years, volunteering in the classroom, tutoring, etc. I have also tutored privately since my children left school. Prior to having children, I was a Systems Analyst for Servistar Corporation, and returned as a consultant for them for three years betweent my first and second children.
While I am not a teacher by profession, I have successfully tutored a variety of leraners in a variety of subjects, primarily math, english, science. My approach to teaching is more of a "why" approach. It is more important for students to know why something is or works rather than just how. This approach works well for middle and high school students. It allows students not only to understand the ideas taught but to apply them to other areas as well. I also like to use visual aids as well as conversation. I have found that many of us vary widely in learning styles. Some are visual learners, others are audio learners, and still others are a combination. I work well one-on-one but also enjoy small groups. As a student myself, I know how difficult it is to learn academics by one person’s particular teaching style. I believe that you must teach by finding out your students’ interests and use those to introduce examples—this helps the student relate. I’ve learned to try out different teaching styles with my students to help me figure out the best way for them to learn. Once that is mastered, I will continue working with that particular style.
