A Little Bit About Me...

My B.A. is in History and Social Behavioral Science. This encompasses Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Economics and Political Science. After graduating second in my class with a 3.9 GPA, I started working for the Art Institute of Chicago. During the last five years, I have worked with children of all ages and at all developmental levels. I also have been responsible for grading coursework in all subjects in the classroom. In addition I have developed lesson plans for small groups. I tutored college level students in Spanish as part of my work study. With regard to my Language Arts credentiials, I was Student Life Editor in school and my History Major greatly enhanced these skills.

Every student is different, therefore every student has different needs. Every student also can learn differently, whether it be by incorporating more or less visual learning strategies, auditory learning strategies, or using more of the "hands on" approach. I am currently writing my thesis in order to finish my Master’s degree in applied physics. My research is on experiment fluid dynamics where I am studying the affects of viscosity on glycerin. I have incredible math and science skills that I would love to teach others. I worked at a community college were I learned different methods of teaching or tutoring others.
I believe that by letting the student try to answer the problem by them self is the best way of learning. I will try to guide them down the right path, but even a wrong answer can teach you a lesson. I also believe that practice is the best way to become good at science or math, like a basketball player practice basketball to become better, so must a student.

I have been teaching for 25 years. I began as a high-school teacher, taught grade school and special education, and then spent 20 years as a university professor of English and philosophy. I started tutoring as a graduate student and have been doing it on and off now for 20 years.
I like working with grade-school students, but I like best a variety of teaching situations. That for me truly represents the challange of teaching. Only a diversity of students can bring learning to itself, reveal the demands of cognition for what they are. As a philosophy PhD this interests me very much.
