More About This Tutor...

Over the years, I have been known as a good tutor because of my will and determination to make sure the ones whom I am tutoring are understanding the material rather than just remembering. For this, I have been known to be a strict tutor, but the significance of this matter is that I always have had students getting at least a grade level higher than what it was. For example, in the 8th grade right before a test to a classmate asked me to review the material that would be on the test, because she had not studied at all.I had ony 10 minutes to tutor this person but as a result, my classmate got a 85 out of 100. In this situation and every, I find out what can I use(weather it is something silly or funny)that help them remember, than I further it into giving them a better understanding of the material.

'Retired' Biologist and Experienced Math Tutor

I believe my job as a tutor is to find a way to help every student learn. I tell all my students if they don't understand the material, then I have to find another way to explain it. I believe anyone can learn math and science when the teaching is tailored to the students learning style.I will take the time to find the best learning style for your student and assign useful homework assignments. If your student is willing to work hard there is nothing we can't accomplish together.
I have been teaching molecular biology to students and technicians in the laboratory for the past 12 years. In college I taught the human anatomy laboratory and a special research section to other undergraduates. I also tutored fellow students in College Algebra. Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. This is especially important in building up understanding in mathematics. Provide relevant examples. A student who is actively enaged in the lesson will learn more.
For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.

I love tutoring and mentoring. I naturally adapt my style to that of each student. As part of the instruction, I often ask easy questions to help them discover the rules of math for themselves. By doing this, my students quickly find concepts that were difficult for them begin to make sense! I also encourage them to ask about everything in the lesson they don’t fully understand. I am a strong believer that all children can learn, some just learn faster than others. I believe in challenging students to think and talk about their thinking so that misunderstandings can be corrected. My teaching style is a little of direct instruction and discovery. Just because there may be one right answer does not mean we all do the same thing to arrive at it. My goal is to help the student understand the concept behind what they are doing.
I have been teaching in the high school and middle school math courses in the classroom for 11 years. Prior to that I tutored friends and family. I have an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and a graduate degree in Secondary Education. I voluntarily tutored some of the kids from my church to help prepare them for state exams. I enjoy math and love helping others to understand and like it as well.

More About This Tutor...

During my doctoral studies at UCSD, I began to tutor professionally as a way to earn extra income. It seemed like a logical choice for a part-time job as I had been helping friends with homework for almost as long as I could remember. Given my extensive scientific training, the vast majority of my tutoring experience has been in Science or Math. However, I would be able to tutor other subjects, such as English and Psychology as well.
As a tutor, I try to identify the learning strategies of my students and then build off of those. For example, if I notice that a student is a visual learner, then I will try to incorporate diagrams, models, and schematics that can assist the student in understanding the subject matter or solving the problem. If, on the other hand, a student learns best by reading, then I will provide step by step instructions of how to find answers to various pro ... read more
