A Little Bit About Me...

I tutored four different children (1st-5th grade) over the course of four years for the Teton Literacy Program, a non-profit group located in Jackson, Wyoming. I met with each child after school at the facility or the local public library for hour-long sessions, working on grammar, pronunciation, and writing, focusing on each students' strengths and weaknesses and helping them catch up to their appropriate grade level as well as building their confidence. In addition, I worked on the I-CAN book project, through the Literacy Program, coaching a second grade class with the creation and assimilation of a story book.

Each of us has his or her own learning style. I prefer to parallel the student's own interests with the topic taught in order to best engage their enthusiasm and enhance their understanding of the subject I am teaching. I believe in the value of individualism and the student's unique gifts. However, how one would teach grammar is radically different from how one would teach drawing. With drawing, one teaches the method while encouraging individual creativity, maintaining a right-brained perspective; grammar and literature require a more rigorous approach since they are governed by rules and formulas, maintaing a left-brained standard. I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning can be frustrating for many students when a particular subject does not come as naturally or easily as other subjects. Thus, I do my best to incorporate student's interests into reward systems and constantly give the student positive feedback about their progress to help motivate the student. As the son of a teacher, education has always been an important part of my life. For the past 25 years I have had the pleasure of working with youth in many different capacities. I have coached, mentored, tutored and taught all ages. After receiving my teaching certificate in 1998, I spent a few years working as a substitute teacher teaching in all subject areas for all grades.
