A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a graduated student from Purdue University with a BS in Speech Pathology and Audiology (SLHS). Between my time in both high school and college, my GPA never dropped below a 3.0. Both settings of education included years of math and science, and in high school four years of writing, English, and history. Volunteer work has been essential since high school, helping teachers, the elderly, disabled, and churches. I also have leadership skills as an assistant editor to a high school magazine as well as an officer for a leadership group for minority and international students.

My comments on tutoring World History : Taken both high school and college level World History classes. Focus is on European History from Greek to post World War II.

I am currently a senior at Indiana Univeristy Kokomo. I will graduate in spring 2013 with a B.A. in Psychology and minors in Leadership Studies as well as International Studies/Relations. My college coursework has a focus on psychology but my degree requires me to have a very liberal education, as such, I have taken classes in english, history, sciences, economics, government, and many others. I am a student leader and have been for the past two years. I am currently Student Body President of IU Kokomo and represent over 3,000 students. Past leadership expereices include being psychology club treadurer and president, orientation leader, and student senator. I have supplemented my college education by working on a behavioral/mental health unit. I have also done research with one of IU Kokomo's psychology professors, and am currently a teaching assistant for another psychology professor.

Spanish Native Speaker Available for Tutoring.

I am an Indiana resident and professional since 1979; Spanish native speaker proficient in conversational, reading and writing Spanish. I volunteered in two Pan American Games (1979 and 1987) helping close the gap between English and Spanish athletes and personnel. I currently provide Spanish translation and interpreter assistance at my employer and my church on an as needed basis. I like to explain and teach as close as possible to "natural" Spanish.
I like an informal but focused style.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching in different areas and capacities for three years now. I started by teaching English to Korean students in Daegu, South Korea. Here I taught all different skill levels and ages. When I returned to the United States I began working at Sylvan Learning Center. I was responsible for running the center. Here I was trained in many of the Sylvan Learning methodologies and feel very comfortable in identifying obstacles that hinder a students progression. At which time I incorporate learning strategies that help them get over the "hump"
My style is easy to get along with. I am friendly with my students but am able to keep the boundaries of the teacher student relationship in play at all times. I do not believe in giving students answers but rather leading them towards a natural discovery of the answers on their own.

Experienced and passionate Writing and English tutor

• Drafted and edited correspondence, reports, and materials for company website. • Created presentations for two East Central Writing Conventions, where I spoke with a team to universities across the Midwest. • Trained new employees at Indiana Wesleyan University Writing Center. • Led and developed writing workshops for over 80 students each semester with a team. • Published in Indiana Wesleyan University’s literary magazine, Caesura, and LIVE Bible. • Completed an internship with writer and editor, Kelli Trujillo, in 2007 where I helped research for her book, The Busy Mom’s Guide to Spiritual Survival.
I tend to take a non-directive approach in which I enjoy teaching a student certain topics and providing examples, then allowing them to create their own paper or project using the tools given to them.

I taught learning disabled/emotionally handicapped middle school students for 7 years. I have about 3 years experience tutoring students of all ages. I have been homeschooling my own children for the past 15 years. I have experince with many subjects. I am also fluent in Spanish and currently work as a medical interpreter.
I enjoy working with students of all ages, but I especially like middle school ages. All students learn in different ways, and I have used many techniques with public school students as well as with my own children. I believe everyone needs to have the skills to research and test out their ideas.

More About This Tutor...

I am currently a graduate student in Political Science at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. I have taught a public speaking course to undergraduate students at Purdue for the past year. I also have experience working with younger children and with special needs students. I have a B.A. in Political Science and Classical Studies from Drew University in Madison, NJ, and I worked for some time as a director and dramaturge in the New York/New Jersey area professional theatre community.
My public speaking class is extremely participatory, both so students can gain experience speaking in front of an audience and because this format seems to keep students more interested in the material. My experience teaching children in theatre was also very participatory. I believe that students learn best when they can understand a given concept from several different angles. I also believe that ... read more

I have always loved school and find that I miss it at times. Because of that I jump at the chance to help those who need it. I college I helped other students who had math and physics classes. I have learned the skills that I needed to both learn and remember and have helped others to do so also. My best friend's little brother is dyslexic and I have helped him throughout high school and now in college. I am very easy going, patient, a problem-solver. As a tutor, I will seek to teach your child in a manner that fulfills his or her needs. I am a patient, friendly, and thoughtful person, and I feel that those characteristics are essential when educating children. These are the qualities that produce a comfortable learning environment, and if a child is not comfortable, they will not be able to reach their academic potential. I look forward to enriching your child’s love of learning.

I would characterize my teaching style as relationally oriented. I want the student to know that I care about him or her. I may not articulate as much, but I want the student to see that I am giving my time to serve their needs and not my own. Loosely speaking, I am also a proponent of multiple intelligences. The creative teacher can usually identify a way to relate material and content using a methodology that connects. My teaching style is based in facts. I philosophically reject radical post-modernity which posits that truth is a moving target. The student does not have the right to tell me that 1+1 = 3 because 1+1 = 2. I believe excellent teaching is rather like music or cooking – part art, part science. You don't get a beautiful wedding cake or a stunning symphony without a good measure of both.
I have extensive preparation and training that will allow me to succeed a ... read more
