K-12 and College Tutor

I have the take a learning styles test in our very first meeting to see what style of learner the are. I then concentrate on teaching them by what learning style they are.
I have tutored K-12 students, as well as college students. I tutor math for K-12 students and business courses and math for college students. My teaching style is whatever best fits the student. When working one on one with a student I practice a few different methods of teaching and whichever one they feel the most comfortable with and I receive the most attentiveness from, is the one that I continue to use. For example, some students prefer that you walk them through a lesson, go over a few practice problems and then let them work on assignments, knowing that they have you to assist them when needed. Others might want to jump into the assignment and when a question arises, they ask you to refer to the lesson to help them find the solution.

I consider myself a facilitator, not an authoritarian. I ascribe to the principles set forth by Malcolm Knowels and Benjamin Bloom. I rely on the strength and motivation of the student. I hesitate to call myself "teacher." I think I serve better as a guide which, hopefully, leads his client not just to a more enlightend place, but also to the place the client wants to be, or had in mind in the first place.
