Experienced Teacher Available

After teaching for 12 years, I decided to step away from the classroom in order to spend more time with my own two kids. I taught in both Rochester City and Brighton, with kids in grades 7-12. Many of my students struggled in school for all different reasons. I would love the opportunity to work with you. School can be really frustrating, but it doesn't have to be. I know a few tricks to help it go more smoothly, and I'd love to share them with you!
I believe in meeting students right where they are, and letting them progress at their own rate. I make learning as relevant as possible and incorporate many hands-on learning opportunities. I present information in a multitude of ways, using modifications and graphic organizers. School should be fun, and most importantly, it should make sense!!

My comments on tutoring Poetry : I won the Outstanding Poetry award in my Highschool in 2008, and later won the Creative Writing: Poetry award at Rochester institute of technology in 2013. I took several creative writing classes while obtaining my BS, including Poetry Workshop classes.

When it comes to language, I believe that people tend to learn best by doing. I also believe wholeheartedly that successfully learning a language depends on your exposure to that language. Continuous exposure to any language can help language acquisition. For English, regardless of what specifically the student is struggling with, consistent reading and writing practice is key. With a manual language like ASL, practicing signing skills and receptive skills is invaluable. Finally, I believe that people learn better when their strengths are pointed out and highlighted rather than their weaknesses. Many students who struggle in school are caught in a perpetual cycle of perceived failures. Optimism, unwavering support, and excitement are key when working with any student.
I have always had a passion for learning. Part of my passion includes helping others learn, grow, and succe ... read more

English and Math are (2) of my strengths but I am well versed in many of the academics skills necessary in order to obtain a NYS Regent's Diploma. Teaching is the business of taking a student from one place to another. I begin with an individual assessment that takes account of the student’s perception of the problem and the academic goals he/she needs to meet. Then, having determined what it is reasonable to accomplish, I work through repetitive assignments and increasingly complex examples to raise the student’s standard of satisfaction and equip him/her with the critical skills necessary to recognize where his work succeeds and where it does not. My approach is interactive and designed to satisfy the student’s aspiration for independent achievement and confident self-assessment.

The great joy for me in teaching literature and composition is sharing strategies for powerful communication to students who are blocked. Although I am inspired and passionate about English, I enjoy demystifying it and revealing how skills in other areas not only apply but can be key. Whether helping readers gain access to poetry or sharing methods to help organize thoughts or research for an essay, I enjoy helping students identify and craft their own insights into effective and powerful messages.
As a Magna Cum Laude graduate, my ten years of professional teaching experience as a lead teacher of secondary English is interspersed with a variety of other relevant experience. In addition to teaching literature, composition and grammar, I have also tutored professionally for Kaplan as part of the federally mandated No Child Left Behind program and for other private tutoring service ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

If you are in need of a writing tutor or English skills tutor (grammar, punctuation, proofreading), I'm the one you want and need. I have a B.A. in English with a concentration in Written Communication. This means that I focused on writing as part of my degree program. I LOVE to write, and if I had the time, I'd write a book - maybe someday. I also have a Masters degree in education, and I taught English in public high school for 5 years. I have tutored students that I taught, as well as those outside of the traditional school setting, through online tutoring programs. Anytime I am able to share my knowledge with others, I feel that I am using my education as I'm helping you to use and further yours.
I enjoy teaching students who are willing to learn. You don't have to love to write as much as I do, but it's my hope that I can make it a little easier for you. I am very structured, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for 21 years now (wow, that's gone by fast!) and I love every second of what I do. I have also been a tutor in the district for the past 9 years, tutoring every subject possible--math, English, Social Studies, etc. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to get to know students who don't take French and also I love to teach other subjects outside my own area. Teaching is the best job there is--I get such a great energy from my students every day! I rarely miss a day of school, and I look forward to going in to work every morning. Everyone should be so lucky to have a job they absolutely love!
My teaching style.... depends on the day, depends on the students, depends on the topic. One minute I can be dancing around the room and the next we're having a more serious discussion. My expectations are very high and I always push my students to do "just a bit bet ... read more

I graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2007 from SUNY Brockport with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, English and Special Education. I have worked as a substitute teacher in all grade levels and in all subject areas. I have been accepted into a high degree Masters program but feel I need to have a job to justify the repayment(s) of additional student loans that would be needed to finish my MA. I have recently been a four county advocate for people with special needs as the Disabilities Program Navigator. I would still hold this position if funding had not run out. I have the abilities to work with any level of education.
I love to work with children of any age. I have been volunteering for over 15 years helping wherever and whenever I can to help make the lives of children more enriched. I have two boys of my own (age 10 and 14) and have been successful in helping them ... read more

• As a NESCAC undergraduate, I explored many areas of study. In addition to earning a BA in English and American Literature while completing a minor in African Studies, I also became fluent in French through study, travel, and teaching. My first teaching experiences were in high school, when I choreographed musicals and tutored a young Chinese boy in English. In college, I co-instructed a drum circle. Finally, this past summer I worked as a Residential Advisor at the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy. In this position I was an academic advisor, a social mediator, and a confidante. In addition to formal tutoring, my strong writing skills have attracted peers in need of a second opinion on their work since high school.
As someone who was enthralled with literature and learning at a young age, I truly enjoy guiding young people through their learning processes. I believe that every ... read more

I was fortunate to receive a very distinguished education through a local school of the Arts program and an Ivy League institution. Both experiences produced within me a tenacious commitment to academic excellence, creative expression, and a strong desire to give back to my community. As a result, I have dedicated several years to serving the community in an educational capacity. I have tutored/taught students in grades pre-k to high school (including students with disabilities), in the subjects of math, ELA, science, social studies, and life skills. In addition, I am a prolific writer, and my literary skills have been utilized by employers for script/form letter writing and the production of staff training materials.

As a Research Scientist in Corporate America, I took the opportunity to focus on enhancing the math and science education of high, middle, and elementary school students. In addition to hands-on classroom activities, I was involved in the Program In Rochester to Interest Students in Science and Math (PRISSM), judged Science Fairs and Science Competitions. Because of my goal of enhancing student achievement, I have taught Chemistry at the Junior College level for the past eight years. I love the appreciation of English Literature and English Grammar as well and so, upon retirement, have taught French and Latin to students in middle school and high school.
The word student comes from the Latin to be eager, and I love to instill the love of learning, n eagerness to learn, in children. The education or drawing out of a child's mind is the ultimate goal, and doing so in a discipline ... read more

Education stands atop my own list of the most important plights of mankind. I believe people are at their highest capacity for learning when they are children, and that such open minds should be given the resources to grow and educate themselves. I am very patient and persistent in my methods. I think teaching is an art of framing the student's mind so that they find themselves more engaged in the world through expression and description of it from the human language perspective (whether numerical or verbal). I get along well with kids and as long as the student I am working with has an attitude of openness, I am sure that it will be a successful, possibly even fun, experience.
As a Cornell graduate, I have had the opportunity be lectured by academic experts spanning a wide variety of disciplines, and have experienced many different teaching styles. I have worked as a course assis ... read more
