I enjoy watching children learn and grow. I believe there are different teaching techniques for each individual student. I have come to learn this because of my younger sibling who didn't fit into the mold of a typical public school student. I am a firm believer in trying new things and new approaches. As a Bowling Green State University student who has studied Communication Disorders I have come across many experiences with children. Communication Disorders not only includes speech, but language as well. I have gained knowledge about how children read and write and why some children may have problems with this. During my last semester of college I observed 25 hours of speech and language therpay which involved watching both adults and children. This year I will be graduating with a 3.0 in my major. Although, I am not a certified teacher, I am currently working towards obtaining my licensure in Language Arts 7-12th grade and have taken several education related classes. I have recently obtained my BA in English and am educated in all of the current trends and graduated in the top ten percent of my class. During my time spent at Defiance College I had the pleasure of working for the Academic resource center as a writing consultant and tutor. There I helped fellow students learn how to write and research effectively. I have also volunteered my time at our local middle school where I helped instruct a fifth grade art class with special needs students. Although, I have never been in charge of my own class room I consider my teaching style energetic. I have been teaching children since 1990, when I worked as a Naturalist for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. I did this kind of education for 3 years. I then created my own educational company and presented workshops on natural resource topics for children and adults from 1997-2002. More recently, from 2006-09, I worked both as a substitute school teacher and a contract tutor. I am presently presenting weekly tree programs at my local Boys and Girls Club. I am an advocate of hands-on teaching whenever possible. Praise works wonders in getting results from reluctant learners.
