My comments on tutoring PSAT : I took prep classes for the SAT but took this test mainly as an indicator of where i needed to focus for the real SAT. However, the tests are very similar and because of my expertise on the SATs I feel beyond confident in both my ability to teach the concepts and improve scores.

I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.
Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.

Expert with Goal that student achieve the A+ in exams

Tutoring Approach: I like to tailor my tuition depending on the student's individual needs as I understand and respect that each student is unique. The first step I take in my approach to tutoring new students is to understand and assess their strengths and weaknesses. I use different styles and methods of teaching depending upon the student's ability and attitude. My main method is to first listen to the student's problems and help them to come to the correct solutions making sure that they understand and are involved in each and every step. I give my students the necessary confidence to ask me questions without any hesitation and often use everyday life experiences to explain subjects. I am inclined to use the reduction method . i.e. breaking down a large problem to small parts in order to make it understandable when I feel its appropriate . This method is particularly effective wh ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is very structured and organized. I teach with the style that every child is unique and learns at their own style and pace. I do not believe in rushing learning nor that every skill, style, environment or learning setting works for every student. My teaching style also mirrors the idea that children learn through hands on, interactive, tactile, and motivating experiences, resources and materials. Most of all, my style of teaching is based upon tapping into each child's own interest or interests that academics can be related and taught through.

More About This Tutor...

I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. I was an "A" student in Physics and enjoyed tutoring many classmates. I was a guest lecturer several times at RPI. Due to work and family commitments I did not complete the degree. My wife and I homeschooled our children through the primary grades. I taught sciences. While an Employee at IBM, I wrote and taight technical courses. Physics is my forte and I love talking about and teaching the subject. I am especially helpfull to students challenged by word problems. Throughout college I would host study groups in Physics and Chemistry. I currently am a financial advisor.
Because I enjoy and see the wonder in science and I like to show that to students. If they see a reason to want the knowledge, and see how it can expan ... read more

For writing, usually I conduct some exercises. The level of the critique and what to say depends heavily on the age of the student. For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded.
Over the past year, I have tried to extend my ability to share my love and appreciation of English and literature with others. As an English/Communications major, I am very knowledgable in a variety of subjects including grammar, writing composition and reading comprehension. Last year, as President of the Writers Forum, we spent several months tutoring as part of an after school program where we helped children in Baltimore write.

I am permanently certified in Secondary English. I have been teaching since 2001. I have also tutored for eight years. My teaching experience covers English grades seven through twelve. I have taught general English classes, honors English classes, college prep courses, special education courses, English labs, English as a Second Language, SAT Prep, and GED level classes.
The stand that I firmly take as a teacher of English Language Arts is that preconceived notions of a student's ability are left outside the door to my classroom. Every student has a different personality, a different belief system, a different home life, and a different style he/she learns best in. However, every student can learn to write and communicate clearly, and to read and appreciate literature when provided with a rich learning environment, motivation, and explanation of the purpose/learning goals behin ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I realize the importance a child’s academic instruction plays in their future. I am well prepared, seeing as I have a B.A in English, to provide my students with a concrete and enticing curriculum. I have witnessed and engaged in remarkable teaching experiences. I have had the opportunity to function in a variety of educational settings, in which I learned various ways to create an energizing and productive learning environment that will promote a genuine interest in English and all of its wondrous offerings. All of my principals, department heads, and other members of the faculty have recognized that I have created constructive changes in students’ academic and overall attitudes and performance. My teaching style is professional, friendly, and peer to peer. I like to break things down for students and I encourage them to ask a lot of questions. I try my best to gauge how the student learns and teach them 'tricks' based on their learning style for committing what was taught to memory. Lastly, I try to build confidence in my students- from what I've seen, that's the key to success. I believe that people inherently know how to express themselves and have it in them to grasp complex concepts easily, it is just a matter of a little guidance.
My educational and professional experience are both concentrated on writing. More narrowly, analytical writing and legislative reporting. My experience tutoring on writing goes back to when I was part of a volunteer peer program, tutoring English as a second language students to assist them with mastering the English regents. Through my teaching experience I have found it necessary to differentiate my teaching styles in order to be an effective teacher. Most often than not I have found that being a facilitator rather than a dictator is most beneficial to learning. I have learned that if students construct their own learning experiences they will not only retain information longer, but they will also become more confident in their abilities.
I have been Involved in the teaching and tutoring of academic subjects for the past 6 years of my life. I have a true passion for instilling the same love for education that I possess in my students. I have worked in about 9 different educational, tutoring, or mentoring facilities both before and after I graduated with my biology teaching certificate. A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate from the State University of New York at Albany, I am driven to achieve the highest level of excellence in education especially in the following generations. I have received a BA in Chemistry and Pre-Med. These degrees have enabled me to gain an understanding in many areas of science, math, and english. In addition, I have learned extensive health and grammatical skills due to writing research papers and laboratory reports, along with essays in many various areas of study. During the last three years I have tutored students in English, Mathematics, and Science.
The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a ... read more

In addition to academics, my students and I focus a lot on being good citizens, and having open/honest communication. I try to foster an environment that instills respect and understanding. In reading, we do both guided reading and book club units. This allows students to get individual skills, along with discussing full texts with one another. My students are very pationate about their writer's notebooks, and the writer's workshop program we have been focusing on this year (and years past). We have worked hard to master the challenging NYS math curriculum, and have met with success within the classroom.
After completing my graduate program and student teaching at Latham Ridge Elementary School, I became an aide within the same building. This position lent itself to filling in maternity years the following year. I was then hired as a sixth grade teacher and have been in that ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent graduate of Syracuse University (December 2009) with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, I am very familiar with the concepts taught in most Mathematics and Physics courses. I was a peer tutor for two years at Syracuse tutoring in the following subjects: Calculus I, II, and III, Probability, Statistics, Differential Equations, Physics I and II, Thermodynamics, and Fluid Mechanics. This has enabled me to hone my tutoring style to a point where it is concise yet readily understandable (something that is especially easy since I was very recently in the same position many of the students are right now).
As a recent student, I am very familiar with what it feels like to be in the position a lot of the students are in right now. At the same time, I understand the best method about how to approach understanding the material in the easiest manner possible. The key is patience and p ... read more
