A Little Bit About Me...

If anyone is looking for a tutor, I would be willing to help. I'm a senior in college studying math and physics. I got a 35 on the math portion of my ACT. I have multiple undergraduate research experiences in mathematics. Both of those research projects have been presented at math conferences. One has been published and the other publication is in progress. I have gotten an A every Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, and Logic course I have taken in college. In high school I was a 4 year veteran in scholastic bowl. I also did math team for 4 years and qualified for state three times. I was a member of Worldwide Youth of Science and Engineering (WYSE) team for three years which included a trip to the state tournament. My teaching style is one which engages the student actively in the learning process. I have used the "popcorn" technique in a classroom, where I call out "popcorn", then call on someone at random. This ensures that each student in the class is following, or else they lose their turn to read. If I'm working w/ a student w/ poor reading skills, I allow them to read, and help them w/ the difficult words, encouraging them to sound out the word. I also try to engage models, and kinestetics, in the learning process. One picture=1,000 words, and one model = 1,000 pictures. I also use these techniques in teaching mathematics.

I am a recent college graduate with a Bachelors of Science degree in both Physics and Applied Mathematics. I have been tutoring and teaching students for over two years in mathematics and science. This experience includes being a leading mathematics and sole physics tutor at my university, working as a science camp counselor, and substituting at a local branch of a nationwide learning center. I have worked with students from the age of 7 to adult.
I love sharing my passion for mathematics and science with students of all ages. My goal for every student is to understand the concept behind the problem, not just how to solve it. I believe that each and every student has an ability to learn and it is necessary to find a method of teaching conducive to the individual. For example, I was a student that learned though hands on activities and writing. Having a teacher stand and lecture never appealed to me. Other children, and adults, may be more apt to retain through reading or repetition.
