Having attended higher learning institutions for over 6 years, my drive for more education is apparent. Throughout my experiences, not only have I been tutored, but have tutored my peers in mostly math and sciences. I have developed my speaking and writing abilities through my own employment experiences and feel that I have what it takes to teach and train individuals manual labor skills as well as mathmatical skills and abstract thinking and problem solving skills to help them understand concepts and apply them to a task.
I believe that people learn in different fashions. For example, I feel that some concepts may be better explained with tangible objects while other concepts are learned better when questioned and discussed. By exploring the different ways of learning we can find what works best for that individual and use that method as a tool for their understanding. I feel, in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience working with the Minnesota Math Corps program has allowed me to work with a variety of students who are at different levels in math. I have learned a great deal in this time about how to structure lessons for my students in ways that not only teach them the process of doing the work, but also the background information about why things work the way they do. I prefer to break a lesson up into a few parts, starting with the student being able to use manipulatives to physically show how to work throught the subject, then moving on to representational and abstract portions that allow the student to further apply and practice what they are learning.
I hold both a Bachelor's degree in Biology and an MBA in Marketing and Project Management. Since August of 2009 I have been serving as a Math Enrichment Tutor in St. Cloud, MN, through the Minnesota Math Corps program. My focu ... read more

I am familiar with high school level physics and mathematics up to and including pre-calculus. After five semesters at the University I transferred to St. Cloud State University to study economics. I honed my statistical and grammatical skills by writing research papers there. During my time at St. Cloud State University I tutored at St. Cloud Technical and Community College. For three semesters there I tutored students in math up to pre-calculus (including trigonometry), statistics, economics, and physics.

I have helped my fellow students learn for nearly as long as I've been learning, myself. While attending Community College, I worked as a Peer Tutor in a wide range of subjects. While attending University, I worked as a General Subject Tutor and as a Math Tutor. I love teaching, but I especially love one on one tutoring. Students I have tutored typically have a much better understanding of the subject they are studying. I approach tutoring as a facilitator of learning, rather than a professor of knowledge. Learning by discovery is a key aspect of my tutoring. I act as more of a guide, steering students in the right direction as they learn. This leads to much more meaningful and applicable learning.
As a recent graduate of Saint John’s University, I possess many skills that make me a great tutor candidate. I have always had a passion for helping others learn. In high school I tutored students from different schools in math. For the past year I have been teaching an ACT prep class for high school students.
I believe that every person has an optimal way in which they learn. Ideas that seem complicated can be made easy by simply changing the way in which it is presented. As a teacher it is important for me recognize how my students best learn and use that to present material. I also believe that students need to feel comfortable with their teachers.
