Throughout my undergraduate studies at BYU, I taught and tutored in Spanish for up 24 hours each week. I supervised 5 districts of students, 10 teachers and up to 65 students at one time, while still teaching in the classroom. Additionally, I graded papers for college-level business courses for several years. As part of this experience, I provided feedback on writing, grammar, and content. As a Mormon/LDS missionary I attended the LDS Mission Training Center and then spent 2 years in the Tokyo area. I studied and spoke Japanese daily. I taught a message in Japanese daily. Also I spoke to congregations in Japanese regularly. Following that time, 2004-2006, I studied at BYU (acclaimed for its language success). Here I have earned 20 credit hours of Japanese with an A- average. I am not fluent but I am very good.

Starting from high school I have always been passionate about young children learning. As a young child I was fortunate enough to have people in my life care about my education and help me succeed. That is what I wish to do. I have approximately three years in tutoring English/Reading and Math to all grades of elementary school and middle school. I feel that repetition is one key that helps students grasp difficult concepts. I start by helping the student understand what the question is asking. Then I will do a problem step by step, showing the student what I am doing. Next, I will have the student do the same problem, but recreate the steps that I had shown them, guiding them along the way. After this type of practice, we will move on to similar problems, using the same steps that we previously used. I have found that this system helps me learn the information and retain it. I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. When there is significant improvement, I move on to the next area of weakness. Pointing out all of a student's mistakes and weaknesses at once drains morale, and that is counterproductive. Working on one area at a time keeps the student from being overwhelmed. I like to have the student read out loud to me, so that we can both see what needs improvement.
