EXPERIENCED IN ACT PREP AND ALTERNATIVE LEARNING STUDENTS...

I believe that people learn the best when they understand the meaning and logic behind what they are learning. When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. It is especially important to understand the concepts behind the subject matter when planning continue in a similar learning subject.

Relaxed but hands-on. I ask students to do a lot of practice to familiarize themselves with the subject/topic at hand while providing lots of support.
I have a year of experience working as a Peer Facilitator at New Mexico State University where I was responsible for grading papers, tutoring, facilitating biology workshops, and hosting exam review sessions for lower level undergraduate biology courses. I am a great tutor because I use my experiences as a student to relate to the students that I am tutoring and encourage them to learn from my mistakes. I try to create a light, relaxed learning environment and encourage students to practice and participate as much as a possible. I also strive to help students build confidence in the subject as well as confidence in their own personal abilities.

My comments on tutoring Psychology : My background in psychology is extensive. I have a minor in the subject and have taken many more hours in order to be certified as a teacher. I like teaching psychology and find it pfascinating.

Teaching middle school and high school science from 1983 to 2004, including every science subject listed in the TutorSelect list. I have worked as an educational consultant for national science laboratories, helping them train their scientists to work better in the school classrooms where they volunteer. I have worked for museums and for outdoor education programs, but have found the most satisfaction as a classroom teacher with all kinds of students. I have worked teaching teachers, but they were very difficult students.

Students need to be equipped with the research skills and ability to fetter out information from a number of different sources. The information must be timely, accurate, credible, relevant, etc. The days of going to a library and pulling volumes of texts to research substantive information has changed. Now, most students understand what a Boolean search is. However, many don’t know much beyond the internet. This is both an imperative skill as a successful student, and as a potential graduate seeking employment.
During the years I have been an instructor and tutor, I have contributed to my students’ confidence and motivation through my interactive and engaging lessons on becoming a successful student. I conduct my lessons with high energy, engaging students to participate and contribute to the discussion. I balance excellent student interaction with effective classroom management. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is encouraging, patient and enjoyable. Children and young adults are a pleasure to work with. The goal is to help them to understand processes and tools that are important for their education. The best part of it is when you have a student finally understand an interesting fact or important concept, that is the real joy of teaching! I provide my students with hands on, visual and examples of these concepts. I understand that all individuals learn differently and part of the process is finding out the best possible resources that will enable each child to learn to the best of their ability. I am also very enthusiastic about the material and topics, this attitude tends to wear off on the students!

A Little Bit About Me...

Thanks to my education in psychology at Brown University, I have gleaned much wisdom about the workings of human behavior as well as the human psyche. I have been able to observe applications of what I've learned throughout my daily life. This is especially helpful in teaching; I can recognize the various personalities and the accompanying learning styles in the students, which enable me to be able to appropriately adjust how I present the material. Since I was 17, I've been tutoring and teaching a broad range of ages, from young tykes, to professionals, to retirees.
Teaching is one of my great passions. I thoroughly enjoy overcoming the initial hurdles as the children are hesitant to receive me as a teacher, and to see them open up to me. It's also thrilling to see them blossom as they absorb new information and incorporate it. I'm certainly an advocate of fostering intellig ... read more

Socratic, I like the students to build on what they already know so that it becomes an extension of their long term memory not another short term memory soon forgotten. I have found ways to connect almost any subject matter from physics to algebra to chemistry nomenclature into something one already knows. If one uses long term memory pegs one can "file" things in memory and recall with very little effort.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching students and to explore subjects with honesty, creativity, and comprehensive scope. I have never met anyone who could not learn and approach each student from an understanding of where they are, what they may have overlooked, and where they need to go. I strive to find the ideal example to help students visualize problems and to remove obstacles to their learning path. I believe the impact of one-on-one teaching leaves lasting positive experiences that are seldom matched with any other type of learning environment.

Teaching is not only my career, it's my life. I strongly believe in Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences which states that there are eight different pathways to learning; as a result, I rely on kinesthetic, spatial, and musical intelligences to present new information. I make my expectations clear to my students, and my students clearly state their expectations of me. I advocate and work hard for my students to show that I truly want to help better their lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with students of all levels and educational needs. With my 4 children and 4 grandchildren, I have elementary, middle school and high school experience. As a teacher at a Job Corps for 7 years, I had the experience of working with non-traditional students. At Job Corps, I taught reading, developed writing skills/creative writing curriculum, and tutored students in math, health and GED prep. As a self-employed consultant for the past 6 years, I have assisted adults in various higher education programs and computer software training.
My teaching style is very flexible. I believe that a learning/tutoring program must be structured to the individual student's needs and build upon his/her strengths. Both the student and the tutor must work as a team to determine the goals of the program, set the work guidelines, establish milestones, and structure the style of the sessi ... read more
