Genuine, personal interest in the child; establishing rapport; establishing the student's mastery level, then building from there (instead of an arbitrary line which creates anxiety); affirmation of every step of progress/success; recognition but careful use of errors in non-judgmental, constructive correction; ease in backing up for review when needed; positive verbal and behavioral reinforcement to the student, including reports to parents about same, all these are things that come to mind. A Little Bit About Me...

As an English major, I spent all 4 years at my private instutition tutoring my fellow students, not only in English and writing courses, but in all academic classes in which I had received a grade of "A" or "B". 3 of my 4 years at Lindsey Wilson were spent in the Education department, as I originally wanted to be a high school English teacher. I also spent several summers as a Camp Counselor, working with children aged 7-15 as well.
I like to determine my teaching style by first evaluating a child's current progress and learning style. Learning is a very individualized process, therefore, teaching must also be individual. I am a relaxed person, and I like to find a way to relate material to a child in a way that he/she will not only understand, but retain. Very simply, I believe that an instructor should be a facilitator of the learning process, not a dictator. The best learning is that which is done by the student him/herself through experiencing and seeing things firsthand. I strive to get to know my students and make my tutoring sessions unique and tailored to fit each individual student's needs.
I have a masters degree in psychology, specializing in child development. During my undergraduate studies, I minored in music and English. In recent years, I have taught music and English to both children and adults. I also have a great deal in knowledge in other subject areas, like history, religion, and even a little Spanish.

In January of 2009, I moved back to the United States after living in Dusseldorf, Germany for four years. While living there, I continued my vocal studies and perfected my teaching style. Holding a BA in music, I am a vocal and beginner piano instructor.
