Tutor for Several Elementary & College Courses

Extensive experience as both a college adjunct (at 6 different universities) as well as a tutor for various courses, with particular skill assisting students in overcoming exam-related stress and learning blocks. My experience includes teaching children (8 years old and above), as well as diverse college students, including student-athletes, and those with a learning disability/hearing disability. I hold three graduates degrees--it's fair to say that I am a life-long learner, which I try to instill in others.
Depending on the course and student, I vary my teaching style from the Socratic Method (with a lot of questions and answers between the student and me), as well as utilizing real world examples to reinforce concepts. Finally, I strive to move from the basics of a concept, to intermediate types of problems, and build to advanced level. By doing so, I focus on the student's ... read more

My comments on tutoring Continuing Education : Reentering college can be challenging with the responsibilities of adulthood. Having support can be key.

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly. My work will improve writing techniques (including essays and basic writing skills), reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and literary creativity. For younger children I work with acquiring reading skills, word recognition, pattern recognition, spel ... read more

Success isn't give, it's earned. You can Succeed!

I have taught Social Studies and Language Arts at the middle school and high school levels in Missouri for three years. I have worked with students that are considered at-risk, ELD, and students with special needs (including Autism, remedial studies, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance disorders). I hold current and valid teaching credentials in both California and Missouri. I am in the last eight months of my Masters Degree at National University for teaching students with special needs. I also hold a Masters in Education in Best Teaching Practices, and Bachelors of Science in Social Studies Education.
I utilize a variety of instructional techniques to help each diverse learner succeed and excel. I believe the most imperative part of teaching is to facilitate a positive rapport with my students and have clear structure for them to work with.

A Little Bit About Me...

"A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary" I think that this quote about teaching, in a way, reflects my idea on what teaching is all about. One can be a good teacher, whose characteristics encompass good knowledge of the subject matter, understanding the needs of your students, and the ability to apply this knowledge to students' needs. However, an effective teacher does not only pass knowledge on to her students, but makes herself gradually unnecessary: her learners become independent learners as they progress through a course. As a teacher, I always try to be effective in this sense - I foster independence in my students. At the same time, I strive for excellence which will eventually make me a better teacher. This endeavor caused me to reflect on how an excellent teacher is different from a good teacher. The conclusion I have come to is that a gap between a go ... read more

Chinese, Guitar, History Tutor in Bay Area Seeks Students

Mandarin Chinese - I use Total Physical Response Teaching (TPRS) when teaching elementary aged novice learners, which teaches Chinese as well as American Sign Language. History - I teach history using the many multi-media databases that I subscribe to each month. Musical instruments - patience and hands on. I have taught/tutored/mentored/and used a one-2-one teaching style to make teaching fun for my students and I. If my students are comfortable then obtaining results will be fun. My experience has been all about what makes my students want to learn and how I can help them become successful. I want to make teaching and obtaining results more fun and easy. I have spend over 20 years in the field of education in Ravenswood City School District. I believe in allowing students to achieve results the best way a student can (ON HIS OWN) by using his/her BRAIN. I have learned to adjust my tutoring skills specifically for the student based on their learning style; allowing the student to get much more out of the experience. The fact that I've worked with various levels has allowed me to experience a good number of behaviors, attention spans, interests, drives, and has allowed me to see the difference in subjects, how they must be illustrated as well as the way students tend to respond. From this, I have been able to curtail my style in correspondence to each tutee.
Since high school I have been involved with tutoring. Although on a voluntary basis I tutored Algebra 2 and BIology in high school. At Stanford, I have been involved with various programs like Math Magic, East Palo Alto Children's Association, HAAS Center...in tutoring students from the area. I have instructed elementary, middle, and high school students thus far. In addition to ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I like teaching. I like teaching individuals. I enjoy the challenge of adapting my style and my information to the unique set of skills and experiences that each individual brings along with them. No two people are alike. So I try not to teach each student as if she is just like the last guy. What is called the "Affective Filter" is what I deal with most: that is the part of each student that is unwilling to try. Many people are uncomfortable with anything having to do with Math, for instance. So, I try to make the session as comfortable as possible. I guess you could say that I try to figure out what your comfort zone is, and what your goals are, and then push you just a little bit out of one and towards the other.
I left the business world in 1999 to make good on my goal of completing my degree and teaching. I wanted the strongest foundation possible, so I chose General Studies, ... read more

I approach instruction from the view that “teach[ing] a man to fish, will feed him for a lifetime”. I am committed to building on what my students bring with them, using this as a fulcrum on which to hinge their learning. This approach succeeds in helping students understand that they are capable of and even responsible for teaching themselves?–?a skill I see as a necessity in life, especially once a student can no longer expect formal instruction. In addition to my own experiences with learning several languages, I have benefited from coursework in Behavioral Psychology, which has taught me to create positive classroom atmosphere. My students note my enthusiasm for language and express appreciation for my linguistic explanations.
