USC Graduate Offering SAT/ACT/College App/K-12 Tutoring

Hello! My name is Mihir Kumar, and I recently graduated from USC under the full-tuition Trustee Scholarship with dual degrees in Human Biology and Economics, and a minor in Mathematical Finance. I’ve been tutoring since 2016 and am currently saving up for medical school, so I'm really looking forward to working with new students! Over the past few years, I have tutored over 75 K-12 students in standardized testing (primarily ACT/SAT/PSAT), math (from elementary operations through Calculus), the basic sciences, English, reading, writing, and more totaling over 2500 total hours (both online and in-person). Many of my students have improved their SAT and ACT scores by 250-350+ points and 5-8+ points, respectively, too. My comments on tutoring Grammar : I can teach grammar, and I can also edit your work for grammar and punctuation.

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly. My work will improve writing techniques (including essays and basic writing skills), reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and literary creativity. For younger children I work with acquiring reading skills, word recognition, pattern recognition, spel ... read more

They work because they promote high student investment and engagement.

Depending on the course and student, I vary my teaching style from the Socratic Method (with a lot of questions and answers between the student and me), as well as utilizing real world examples to reinforce concepts. My comments on tutoring Grammar : In addition to a BA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing/Poetry, I have more than a decade of editing experience. I was a volunteer editor for Poetry International Magazine and am a founding editor of The California Journal of Poetics. I am a stickler for grammar, spelling, and syntax. Typos and other errors stick out to me as if illuminated by neon lights. My colleagues often come to me for when they need something proofread.

I am all about positivity. I believe in constructive feedback and intelligent discussion. I am patient and willing to approach a subject or issue from many angles until the student is comfortable with the material. I believe that passionate teachers create passionate students. I want people to love this stuff as much as I do!
I have a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing--specifically poetry. Dozens of my poems have been published in print and online. I am a founding editor of The California Journal of Poetics for which I write, edit, and publish book reviews, interviews, essays, criticism, and other bits and pieces about poets and their writing. I have also taken several graduate level courses and workshops in the writing of novels, short stories, micro-fiction, and creative nonfiction.
