Hello! My name is Mihir Kumar, and I recently graduated from USC under the full-tuition Trustee Scholarship with dual degrees in Human Biology and Economics, and a minor in Mathematical Finance. I’ve been tutoring since 2016 and am currently saving up for medical school, so I'm really looking forward to working with new students! Over the past few years, I have tutored over 75 K-12 students in standardized testing (primarily ACT/SAT/PSAT), math (from elementary operations through Calculus), the basic sciences, English, reading, writing, and more totaling over 2500 total hours (both online and in-person). Many of my students have improved their SAT and ACT scores by 250-350+ points and 5-8+ points, respectively, too. A Little Bit About Me...

I have more than 14 years of experience as a Literature, Language, Business Communications, Technical Writing, and Composition Instructor at the college level. I hold a Master of Arts degree in English Language and Literature and a TOEFL certificate which I earned before teaching for five years in Poland. Although my expertise is in adult education, I have a great deal of experience teaching at both the middle school and high school levels.
I have devoted myself to teaching as a profession for the last fourteen years because I feel a sense of worth in what I do. I believe that my role is that of a facilitator. My job is to help students define their goals, explore the resources they have at hand to reach those goals, and facilitate the process of meeting those goals. My choice to teach also rests on a foundation of community. As a college instructor, my worth is tied to more than t ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a classroom instructor, I am conscious that one needs to constantly engage with and interact with the class. I always taught in a tutorial style, where after I've introduced the material the students must solve a puzzle or problem based on it. I believe that to engage students there must be a discovery component to the class. In a tutoring role, one can take the students strengths and build on those. Often a student has lost all confidence (and hope!) and doesn't realize how much he or she knows. By patiently building from simple problems this confidence can be restored.
As a graduate student at UC Berkeley, I was a TA for twelve semesters in a range of physics classes. In 2002 I won the UC Berkeley Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor award. After graduating I was a lecturer for 2 years at 50% time. This was at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. There I dev ... read more
