Make school work.

I have been in education for 16 years. I specialize in working with students with ADD/ADHD, specific learning disabilities as well as students who underachieve. I have a Master's Degree in Special Education and have successfully worked with students all over the Bay Area to help them realize their full potential.
Not all students are successful and the trick is to identify the reasons behind the lack of success. The issues that students have with school are diverse; procrastination, lack of organization, failure to plan, lack of awareness, ineffective habits, learning disabilities, and differences are all possible explanations for school failure. I work with students one on one to help them pinpoint where things break down for them and then work with them to find strategies to help them manage the skills and material they are asked to learn and master. I am there to guide, not ... read more

USC Graduate Offering SAT/ACT/College App/K-12 Tutoring

I really pride myself in personalizing my tutoring. I try to never have more than 6-7 students at a time so that I can provide the best possible personalization of teaching to each student. Additionally, being at a similar age to many of my students helps me relate to them a lot better than some older tutors may be able to; I have more recent experience with taking the same courses/tests as them or applying to colleges like them, and this helps a lot in my tutoring personalization. In terms of my teaching style, I love being able to connect with students beyond the structured environment of most classrooms and tutoring/prep academies. I try to provide my students with just enough structure so that they know how to study, how to test, etc., but enough autonomy so that they can learn how to succeed on their own. Helping students navigate this fine line is really meaningful, as many ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

There are four components of good mathematics teaching that I feel are important and I try to implement in my practice. The first component is mathematical. It requires a teacher to be intimate with the mathematics that he or she is about to teach. A teacher must know the mathematics extremely well in order to be able to ascertain what it is that the student is thinking. This is the second component of good teaching - the psychological. I believe that in order to be a good teacher one has to be able to crawl inside the mind of the students and see the material through their eyes with their previous knowledge. One has to remember what it feels like not to know. Once it can be determined where the students are in their thinking, a teacher will be able to construct a logical progression of content – a bridge – that will help get the students from where they are to where a teacher wa ... read more

I take a look at what the existing instruction materials are attempting to convey and I add to that or expound on that. I use Google extensively to look for similar examples to the problems the student might be having. I believe that it is best to solve any given problem in at least two different ways if you really want to get some insight. It also helps in either verifying your answer or checking if you are in the ballpark.
I have an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering. I have a Masters in Systems Engineering. I have tutored one person in statistics, algebra, analytical geometry and elementary functions for one year. She has maintained an “A” average during that time.

My approach to teaching math and science is to thoroughly prepare a student by first emphasizing the fundamentals. Too many students get "lost" if advanced concepts are taught too soon. Then, once a student is ready, the studies should emphasize the students strengths and interests to the utmost possible.
As an engineer and mathematician I have experience in all areas of Aerospace engineering, including management and mentoring of engineers over much of my 44 year career at Lockheed Martin. I have also tutored math, phyics, and other related subjects.
