One can be a good teacher, whose characteristics encompass good knowledge of the subject matter, understanding the needs of your students, and the ability to apply this knowledge to students' needs. However, an effective teacher does not only pass knowledge on to her students, but makes herself gradually unnecessary: her learners become independent learners as they progress through a course. If I do not know the answer, I then teach them how to look up the answer or work it out from fundamental assumptions. By having them approach me their interest level is peaked and them retain the information. I learned in graduate school how to learn which I then pass along to my students.
I taught advance instrument design at Stanford University using laser detection technology. The two semsters involved handles on generation of working prototypes.
