My comments on tutoring Social Studies : I spent many years teaching Middle School Social Studies and am quite knowledgeable about the curricula for grades 6-8: Ancient History, the World in the Middle Period of History and American History. I also worked as a member of a team developing curriculum materials for grade 7 Social Studies and have trained teachers in that curriculum.

My comments on tutoring Social Studies : Basic elementary school social studies is a subject I can tutor.

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly. Social Studies is one of my top subjects!

A Little Bit About Me...

My first tutoring experience actually began when I was a high school senior and tutored ESL students at South High School. Since then I have worked in a summer program tutoring elementary ESL students, gone on to graduate with degrees in English and Environmental Studies, and most recently, worked as an Americorps member at Andersen Elementary and Open in Minneapolis.
