I have been a substitute teacher for about 10 years specializing in math & physics. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 20+ years of maintenance/engineering experience. I incorporate practical examples in teaching to give students in depth knowledge in a practical sense. I gather my examples from my varied career experiences from the Military, Aircraft, Engineering, Manufacturing/Maintenance & Computer fields. I sporadically tutors students in my specialty.
I use the Active Participation strategy because it engages the learner not only in understanding but in contributing as well. This active learning process combined with introduction of practical uses/examples of the the subject matter provides a deeper meaning. I am a practicing engineer on my way to a career change to the education field. I have been volunteering in high schools, tutoring, and attending teaching instruction workshops over the last several years. This fall (2010) I will begin teaching credential studies at either St. Mary's University (Moraga)or Santa Clara University (Santa Clara). My subject areas are to be, initially at least, math and physics.
