While completing my BS in engineering, I spent two years tutoring math, physics, and optics. During my senior year I was also able to teach a portion of two terms of the freshman optics class. During the last four years I have worked as an aerospace engineer, and as a private contractor. Although these weren't teaching positions, I believe that these experiences have given me unique opportunities to share my knowledge and will be helpful to me in the future for teaching and tutoring.
What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class. My goal is to find a way to present the material in such a way that the experience of learning is a journey of ... read more

I place a high value on practical education. I graduated high school at the top of my class and received my AA degree just a few of months later- all while working full-time. I then obtained my BA in Organizational Management and I am now in a local graduate degree program. Because of my heavy workload I was able to develop effective and efficient study methods. I have been tutoring, mentoring and coaching children, teens and adults for the past nine years with great success to them academically, socially and emotionally. I also have a great desire to teach adults and have tutored many in computer skills Specifically, I have tutored students in English (literature, grammar, writing, etc.), mathematics, science, and liberal arts.

While teaching special needs I worked with many kinds of students, including those with: autism, physical disabilities, downs syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, ODB, and many others. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe strongly in the importance of traditional subjects such as grammar and composition, reading for comprehension and appreciation, and knowledge of our cultural heritage. I tailor my tutoring to the student's personal experiences and background, in order that he/she has a real connection to the material. I strive to explain fully the practical purpose of any subject we are covering, as well as how study of a given subject can, does, and will enrich the student's life, now and in the years to come. I take time to explain how each bit of new knowledge is a building block, and you must begin with a firm foundation before you can climb high in a subject area and feel the thrill at the pinnacle of your study. I like to incorporate a sense of humor as well as "reality checks" in my communication with pupils; i.e., sometimes we have to reach inside ourselves to find a reason to compl ... read more

Everyone has the ability to learn but not everyone has the same ability. Most people are visual or tactile learners whereas most teachers, in my experience, use verbal/aural instruction methods. I believe in tailoring my teaching to the needs of the student and not to what I am most relaxed with. I have personally taught several tactile students who had to have something in their hands or they could not grasp the concepts. Other times I've instructed students in strong visual methods incorporating drawings, artwork and short videos.
During my studies at USU I worked at Adams Elementary both as a Teachers Aid as well as a Mentor during the After School Program. I worked one-on-one as well as in groups of students grade k-5. This position was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable that I've had and would love to continue. I have also taught American Sign Language at the University ... read more

Having the opportunity to work with and help all sorts of students has allowed me to better define and shape the methods that I use to teach and assist students. I would describe my teaching style as very dynamic. I try my best to explore what methods of thinking and presentation work best for each individual student. I typically try to present topics from multiple perspectives (eg: visually vs. abstractly). I also emphasize peeling back the layers of knowledge to a level the student finds intuitive and then rebuilding on that foundation.
I am a recent graduate of the University of Washington. My studies focused on physics, pure/abstract mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, as well as some work in statistics and engineering disciplines. I have a BS in Applied Computational Mathematical Sciences which is a hybrid degree that focuses on all of the disciplines listed ab ... read more
