I had an amazing biology teacher in high school who was upbeat, interactive and made learning, memorable and fun. I try to take this same approach myself to figure out what is important to students and play on their interests and strengths to help them learn. I typically try a couple of different styles, like flash card memorization, word association (sometimes seemingly unrelated but the funnier and more obscure they are, tend to stick in the memory better), picture association, etc. Having effective discussions about subject matters, particularly with difficult topics, can help the student gain a more in depth understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching 3rd grade Sunday School for two years. I have been assisting my children in an educational capacity for over 7 years. I have experience in a preschool setting, volunteering with children ages 3-13, and also as a tutor to dyslexic and ADD/ADHD children. I am also a writer currently engaged in finishing my first novel.
I believe in teaching with love, enthusiasm, compassion, understanding, excitement, and discipline. You must keep an open mind, open heart, and open arms to be truly successful. I employ a variety of educational styles in an attempt to engage all types of learners, with a heavy emphacis on hands-on activites. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. Letting them make and try to correct their own mistakes seemed to be the best teaching tool I had.
