I have taught all aspects of literacy since 2003. This includes reading, writing, grammar, phonics, spelling, and handwriting. I was an Early Literacy teacher for two years and a Title I teacher for three years. In addition, I have taught preschool children and middle school children. My last three years of teaching directly were in a second grade classroom. I have abundant experience in assessing reading skills and abilities and determining students' reading levels. I try to include fun in every lesson. Playing games, creating rhymes or chants to remember mechanical rules helps students to move forward in their skills. I believe in breaking assignments into steps so that a child can experience success and completely understand each part. I also believe in making learning fun and having a very positive attitude. I have taught special education since August of 1989. I began at Dunn Middle School with a mildly mentally handicapped self-contained class. After three years I taught for one year at Clayton Primary in a multi-handicapped class. I then transferred to Four Oaks Middle School in 1993 where I continue to teach. The first year there I taught a self-contained mentally handicapped class, and since then I have taught through the inclusion model. Through co-teaching I work with the regular education teachers in grades six, seven and eight in the areas of math and language arts. I have been a certified teacher since 1986, and for the past 6 years have been a Title I reading teacher in Pinellas County Schools. I have extensive experience in working with young students in many subject areas, as well as tutoring experience in reading and vocabulary skills. I have also done volunteer work teaching English Conversation and Grammar to adults for whom English is not their native language.
