Tutor for Regular Elementary and Special Education

I have recently retired after 30+ years as an elementary special and regular education teacher. For the past 15 years I have also worked as a tutor for the city of White Plains. I have done extensive private tutoring for the past 20 years. For 17 years I worked as an elementary special education classroom teacher at New York Hospital in an out-patient day treatment program. This program involved elementary school age children who displayed severe emotional and academic difficulties and were unable to function in a regular school setting.
Multi-sensory, positive reinforcement approach with a focus on student involvment by the use of manipulatives for a hands on approach. I have also employed behavior modification programs in the classroom setting when necessary.

A Little Bit About Me...

Most of my career has been spent at IBM, where I built on my Physics background for a broad range of opportunities. I am now seeking to move into a teaching career and plan to start a Masters in Teaching in the Fall of 2009. During my educational development, I taught for three years in undergraduate and graduate school as part of the duties of a teaching Assistant. I received my BA from one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. In addition to my psychology degree, I also studied Spanish extensively. Based on the liberal arts education that I received, I am fully capable of teaching a number of subjects including Spanish, History, and English. A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very descriptive and thorough teacher. I enjoy explaining subjects first, then writing examples on the board to encourage note-taking. Then I like students to think of their own examples. I like to ensure that I am very clear in delivering my point, because I know how some students will remain quiet, even if they do not understand completely. If a student struggles to comprehend, and then I move on to the next topic too quickly, it is easy for that student to fall behind.
