I have been involved with youth since completing Bible College in 1978. I have two grown children who both completed college (my daughter cum laud in chem; University of Kentucky). I also have two step children; ages 12 and 10. I have been a qualified substitute teacher for the last 4 years, so have a working knowledge of state standards for all subjects; especially math.
My "ace in the hole" in teaching is the fact that I care for students and they know it. I do make it well known that I am there to teach; not be their friend (or their parent!). I typically set the limits, introduce the lesson, focus on learning the content, and be attentive to individual needs. Assessment is done through answering and asking questions. I believe that every child has a right to learn. I believe that, no matter what kind of problem or learning disability that student has, that he/she deserves to learn. It is the responsibility, not only of the teacher, but the parents, grandparents, siblings and community to help children receive the best education that they can. I believe that all children learn differently. Some learn through doing; some through listening; others are a combination. I teach to each child in the way that best helps them to learn.
While completing my masters in Special Education, I have learned creative ways to help children with special needs that I work with. I have designed and coordinated a Resource Center to help students with special needs learn and achieve at their level. I have also designed and implemented a school for children with special needs.
